University Dinner: Listed Infrastructure: A Portfolio Utility

Peter Meany, Head of Global Listed Infrastructure at First State Investments, will discuss the asset class, his outlook for the year ahead and give his insights and experience on the utility offered by listed infrastructure to a broader diversified portfolio.

Infrastructure serves as the backbone for economic growth, boosting aggregate demand in the short-term and developing the productive capacity of the economy over the longer-term. Meeting current projected global GDP growth will require an estimated $57 trillion in infrastructure investment between 2012 and 2030, more than the estimated value of today’s infrastructure. Indeed, innovation opportunities with existing assets offer great potential to improve productivity and lift returns.

Whilst Pension funds have recognised the opportunity in infrastructure by investing directly in illiquid infrastructure assets, the opportunity that Global Listed Infrastructure offers has been less explored. Even with the well-established performance characteristics of steady yield, inflation protection, lower volatility and strong total return, portfolio positioning for the listed strategy is generally not accepted.
