Dr Suzie Imber is a planetary scientist, leading a research team investigating the Earth’s environment and specialising in spacecraft data analysis and mission design. During her presentation, Suzie will address the overarching themes of the environment and social factors through discussing how advances in the space industry will enable enhanced monitoring of our fragile planet, from charcoal burning in Africa, to deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest, and even identification of sites of modern slavery. International governance will be discussed through the lens of lessons learned from the international leadership programme (Homeward Bound) she has been selected for, designed to build a network of, and facilitate discussions between, scientists and policy makers. She will also touch on her own experiences of climate change as an explorer and high altitude mountaineer. Finally, she will discuss the role of the Antarctic not just as a pristine, sensitive and at-risk environment, but as an example of a fragile, but decades-long international collaboration. She will also draw parallels between the environmental and humanitarian challenges we face in this age of the Anthropocene, and those that face us as we recommence our journey into the world of human space exploration, and lunar exploitation.
