The Sizewell C team at EDF Energy would like to invite you to discuss the need for nuclear as part of the UK’s electricity mix to help us achieve net zero.
Climate change is real: it is critical to focus on how the UK can achieve its legally binding commitment to reach net zero by 2050. To hit net zero, we need both to decarbonise electricity generation and to generate more low carbon electricity (to support the electrification of our heating and transport sectors – and the power cut in August showed us how dependent our society is on electricity). We need to make big changes to achieve these targets, while ensuring that our lights stay on and without doing damage to our economy. France and Sweden are countries that have achieved a low carbon electricity mix using a mix of nuclear and renewables, proving to us that it can be done.
Wind and solar provide us with affordable, low carbon, renewable energy but we need to ensure we have electricity whatever the weather. We have to provide alternatives to gas and coal for firm dispatchable power sources. Nuclear power provides firm, low carbon power whatever the weather.
The Sizewell project will also provide a huge amount of regional investment, job opportunities, training and skills development as well as a reducing carbon emissions. The Sizewell Project is committed to ensuring that environmental, social and good governance are at the heart of the project from the outset.
The Government is currently consulting on implementing the regulated asset based model for new nuclear, enabling us to provide a long-term inflation linked, ESG compliant investment opportunity: an exciting opportunity to invest in reducing the UK’s carbon emissions.
