The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries has chosen Kartina Tahir Thomson as its next president-elect.
She will assume the role in June, when Kalpana Shah becomes president. Thomson’s presidency will then take effect from June 2024.
Thomson brings 25 years of diverse actuarial, risk, governance and regulatory experience to the role. She is currently a senior director at consultancy WTW and independent non-executive director and chair of the Risk Committee at funeral services provider Dignity.
She has also spent six years at the Bank of England, where she supervised a portfolio of insurance firms and was responsible for ensuring financial stability of the UK financial market. Prior to that, Thomson was chief risk officer at Navigators Underwriting Agency (part of The Hartford).
She has served on the IFoA Council for six years and is a member of the IFoA Audit and Risk Committee. She has also been on the board of directors of the Actuarial Association of Europe for four years.
Thomson said: “It is an honour to be entrusted with the role by my fellow Council members. By nurturing a collaborative and inclusive culture, we can deepen the impact of the profession both in the UK and internationally and continue to make a difference in addressing the societal challenges that we face.”
What should be the IFoA’s priorities under the next two presidencies?
