Aviva has appointed James Hillman as chief risk officer, an opportunity which Hillman said he “couldn’t turn down”.

The British insurer did not specify Hillman’s start date for the new role but said he will join the firm later this year, subject to regulatory approvals. Until that date, Stephen Gould will continue as CRO on an interim basis. Gould has been tasked to take up the interim post after Andrea Montague decided to leave the company for personal reasons.

Hillman is currently chief financial officer of Scottish Widows and finance director of Lloyds Banking Group’s insurance, pensions and investments division.

He has more than 20 years’ experience working in regulated roles. Hillman was chief actuary at Scottish Widows’ life and general insurance business from 2015 to 2019. Before that, he was at consultancy EY, becoming a partner in the European insurance risk and actuarial practice in 2005.

Amanda Blanc, group chief executive of Aviva, described Hillman’s appointment as a “fantastic addition” to the company. She said: “He is a highly experienced leader with a strong track record in financial services and regulated businesses. As CRO, James will play a crucial role as we continue to grow, manage risk effectively and deliver for our customers.”

Hillman said: “The opportunity to lead the risk function at this exciting time for the company was one I couldn’t turn down. I look forward to working with Amanda and the wider team.”

In March, the insurer appointed Richard Priestley as CRO for UK life. He joined from Canada Life, where he held a number of roles, most recently managing director and executive director for the UK insurance division.

He replaces Paul Mylet, who took on the role on an interim basis.

Priestley said on LinkedIn: “After 10 enjoyable years at Canada Life working with some great people (too many to list here) I’m pleased to be joining Aviva as CRO - UK Life. Looking forward to the new role and a fresh challenge.”
