“I’m so worried that kids will not learn how to write good essays because they can use ChatGPT now”, she said while I took a sip of red wine. “Remember how much we used to have to read”, he replied, thinking back to a time before generative AI was able to summarise information from all over the web. This conversation got me thinking.
A lot of people see generative AI as a threat but are also often disappointed in the quality of its output. Yes, I once asked ChatGPT to give me a list of sales prospects with email addresses, and it confidently made stuff up. There are many other examples of factual inaccuracy.
As it is today, AI is more like a brain than a thinking being.
We are all born with a brain, but so what? We cannot walk, talk or feed ourselves, let alone make investment decisions or persuade people to trust us in those decisions.
Our brains are powerful, but useless without the nurture, care and education they receive in a lifetime. Varied stimuli, gentle guidance and much repetition are the cornerstones of child development. Later in adult life, our intelligence is further formed by the rigorous schooling of our professors and mentoring of our bosses.
In much the same way, an AI is useless without the input, training and specific instructions it receives. It takes trial and error, and much repetition to get a perfect result. And sometimes, just like people who would lie to save face, it would do that too!
This is why it is best to delegate to an AI that is trained for the task at hand.
AI as a brain is faster and more detail-oriented than humans. But it can be slower too – like a new employee who is not trained yet, and you never even had a chance to interview. They try their best but, eventually, you give in to the time pressure: you do the task yourself because it is easier than developing their talent right now. Sometimes, not delegating is faster even if you miss out on future efficiency.
mallowstreet's AI SOFI is trained to listen to asset managers present to UK institutional investors (pension schemes and insurers, more specifically). It checks their messaging across six key lenses: risk, return, liquidity, time horizon, the growth and cashflow profile of the strategy and its ESG credentials. SOFI is also designed to interpret all questions as an investment professional, so it saves you time, keeps track of all important details and improves your delivery.
