The Society of Pension Professionals has elected Sophia Singleton as its new president for a two-year term, which started on Saturday.

Singleton, a trained actuary who is currently the head of defined contribution consulting at XPS Pensions Group, succeeds Barnett Waddingham partner Steve Hitchiner.

The SPP said its membership has grown by about 20% over the past two years. Singleton aims to increase the SPP’s influence and to establish it as a “champion of [equality, diversity and inclusion] within the industry”.

She joined the SPP Council in 2020, when she also started working at XPS after more than 17 years at Aon. Singleton advises trustees and corporate sponsors across all areas of their DC benefits, focussing on benefit design, investments, member engagement, data analytics and scheme governance.

The newly elected president plans to work with industry stakeholders and policymakers to stimulate policy analysis and debate.

“In particular, I’d like to focus on ways consumer support and protections can be strengthened to improve DC outcomes, focussing on reviews of auto-enrolment, development of long-term retirement solutions and exploring how to improve investment outcomes, all while ensuring security for DB members remains a priority,” Singleton said.

She added: “We will also strengthen our role as a representative of all parts of our industry, engaging with the next generation of industry professionals and championing EDI."

The SPP’s chief executive Fred Emden thanked Hitchiner and added: “I look forward to working closely with Sophia to achieve her presidential objectives, which will help continue to drive positive change for the SPP and industry."
