Liz Kendall has been appointed secretary of state for work and pensions, having had the role in the shadow cabinet since September.

Earlier this year, Kendall said that progress on pensions has stalled since the introduction of auto-enrolment, saying she would “finish the job” if Labour gets into power.

She said at the time that a Labour government would set out proposals “to ensure savers get the best possible returns and identify the barriers to pension funds investing more into UK productive assets”.

Number 10 is yet to appoint a pensions minister; the position had been vacant in the shadow cabinet after Gill Furniss stepped down in April. Furniss has been re-elected to represent Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough.
