The pensions minister has apologised for not giving the Work and Pensions Committee more notice of the recruitment campaign for a new chair of the Pensions Regulator.
In a letter to committee chair Debbie Abrahams from 3 July, Torsten Bell thanked the committee for making time for a pre-appointment hearing for the TPR chair in its future planning.
He added: “I would like to apologise for the committee not being given the appropriate amount of time to consider the letter and the related recruitment campaign. I have asked the Department [for Work and Pensions] to ensure that adequate notice is provided for all subsequent campaigns of interest to the committee.”
The DWP recently made TPR board member Kirstin Baker interim chair while the search for a permanent chair is ongoing. Baker is a former civil servant at the Treasury.
Bell wrote: “I understand your disappointment with the need for an interim chair. This simply reflects time constraints.”
Bell said to attract good candidates, a “well planned” campaign was necessary. The DWP needs about two months just to plan the recruitment of a TPR chair in a way which follows the governance code for public appointments, followed by several months of the actual campaign and relevant checks and approvals.
The job advert for the permanent chair is available online. The deadline for applications is at 5pm on 14 July, and interviews are expected to end on 12 September.
