Improving Members’ Outcomes Through Better Diversification in Fixed Income

DC investment design is facing new investment challenges. Recent market turbulence caused in part by rising inflation and a higher interest rate trajectory has particularly exposed DC fixed income allocations to material losses and significant volatility. As assets used most often for their ability to reduce drawdown risk and volatility of members savings, we believe a review is needed into how best to meet this goal within the fixed income universe.

During this session we will discuss what’s driving recent headwinds and how this has impacted traditional fixed markets prevalent in DC. We will then introduce the role that Asset Backed Securities could play in complementing traditional fixed income to better serve DC members interests in the years leading up to (and indeed in) retirement.

The opportunities for investment in the emerging markets are well documented. Supportive demographic trends, such as population growth and a rise of the middle income consumer are driving demand for a broad range of products and services that those of us in the developed world take for granted.

The risks, however, in these markets are significant. In this session Glen Finegan, Head of Emerging Market Equities at Janus Henderson Investors, will discuss why his team’s approach is focused on risk management and that long-term performance is defined as much by what you don’t own as what you do.

Glen Finegan Head of Global Emerging Market Equities
Glen Finegan is Head of Global Emerging Market Equities at Janus Henderson Investors, a position he has held since joining Henderson in 2015. Glen also serves as a Fund Manager on the Emerging Markets Equity and International Opportunities strategies. Prior to joining Henderson, he was a senior portfolio manager at First State Stewart (formerly First State Investments) where he covered global emerging market all capitalization equity strategies. He was based in Edinburgh from 2001 until 2011, when he relocated to Singapore. Prior to First State Stewart, he spent three years working as a geophysicist within the oil and gas industry.
Glen holds a BEng (Hons) in civil engineering and an MSc in oceanography, both from the University of Southampton. He has 16 years of financial industry experience.
