Inflation: Building a Case for Infrastructure Investing

With prices of everything – from fuel to fruit salad – feeling the pinch of inflation, and amid justified concerns about the potential for global recession, where can investors find assets that are detached from the economic cycle with the potential to provide an element of inflation protection? We think global listed infrastructure is the one area of the investment universe offering defensive business models, liquidity and the contractual ability to pass through inflationary pressures before they even start to have an impact. Brendan Mulhern
Global Strategist, Real Return Team
Brendan is a Global Strategist and a member of the Real Return team. He attends the global strategy group, has responsibility for analysing trends in financial markets and helping to develop the long-term themes that form the base of Newton’s investment framework.
Prior to joining Newton, Brendan was a member of the investment team at Axa IM and Iveagh ltd managing multi-asset portfolios. Brendan holds a degree in international business economics and statistics and is a CFA1 charterholder. Outside of work, Brendan is a keen cyclist.
Paul Brain
Investment Leader, Fixed Income Team
Paul is Investment Leader of the fixed income team. He joined Newton in 2004, and manages a range of global bond portfolios. He is also part of the leadership team for the Newton Global Dynamic Bond strategy. Paul is chairman of the bond/FX strategy group, and a member of the global strategy group and the investment committee.
Paul has held a number of senior fixed-income positions within the industry at MSG & Partners, Investec and Credit Suisse. Outside of work, Paul enjoys cycling, learning foreign languages and travel.
