The Castle Combe Summit 2022

Important

Delegates are expected to attend the full event. We do understand that this is a time commitment in diaries. Please do let us know if you need to step away for a call/meeting and we shall adjust your personal agenda.

"The mallowstreet Summit is an event not to be missed. The level of attendees is very high, there is a lot of sharing of ideas and an open atmosphere. The mix between investment talks and inspirational speakers works well and get’s everyone talking and forward looking."

The mallowstreet Summits return to one of our favourite locations in the UK, The Manor House, at Castle Combe in Wiltshire where we will hear from a diverse set of inspirational keynote speakers alongside world class asset managers as we explore 'Where Next?'.

Attendance at the Summits is by invitation only and there is no delegate fee charged. Delegates need only arrange their own transport. There are no more than 25 delegates (Trustees, Chair of Trustees, CIOs, Investment Committee Members, Pensions Managers) at each Summit so you are assured an intimate learning and relationship building experience.

  4. Geopolitical Risk in a Multi-Polar World

We live in the interim period between two bi-polar worlds – the Cold War, and the fastapproaching form of cold war between China and the USA. In this period some countries are showing which side they will favour, others are hedging their bets, and a few are using the multipolar dynamic to advance their agendas before the discipline of a bi-polar world kicks in. This presentation looks at the forces pushing and pulling the movements of people and the volatility of regions such as the IndoPacific and the Sahel. A 'Biden Doctrine' appears to be slowly emerging – so far it is a nebulous concept, but behind it is the notion that the democratic world can offer developing countries, and others, a viable alternative to China's increasing dominance in a number of fields.

  18. The Future of Medicine

Humans long for a healthy, long life. In 200 years, we have moved from witchcraft to science and seen the rate of progress accelerate. Whilst some of the biggest changes (materials science, computing, biochemistry) have been in our lifetimes, what is happening now is transformative. In this talk, Martin will discuss (with examples) the impact and potential significance of developments in genomics, immunology, medical devices, drug discovery, cell biology, AI, data science and personalisation of care. All are dependent on easily available, accurate population data. Charlatans have been part of medicine since its inception, damaging its reputation. These new developments must be conceived and shared with transparency to develop and sustain trust from the public and investors. Sorting out the balance between individual privacy and wider public access to data will be critical. Martin hopes to make you think about the moral and societal consequences of these changes, as well as marvelling at what is to come.

  26. Horatius Saves the Ukrainean Bridge

The Victorian poet, Macaulay, wrote a stirring poem of how a tiny band of warriors defended Rome against the legions of Tuscany. The lengthy poem became the memorised recitation of defiance even on Robben Island Prison during Apartheid South Africa. Nelson Mandela knew it by heart.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, almost every strategist thought it would fall in a week. Weeks later, the heroism against huge odds is plainly visible, and the terrible quality of the Russian forces was visible both on land and in the air. Unable to defeat the Ukrainians, terrible vengeance was wrought through atrocities against unarmed civilians. All laws of war were broken.

What will happen now? Is there still a sting in the Russian tail? Will the West up the ante by accepting what may yet be only two thirds of pre-war Ukraine - after Russian conquest and likely annexation of Donbas - into NATO? Will the Russian economy recover from drastic sanctions and re-integrate itself into the global financial system? And what will be done to the Russian military machine after its dismal showing? To mix classical metaphors, have the Ukrainians sewn the teeth of the Hydra and in fact instigated a new Cold War with a Russia determined to upgrade its aggressive capacities - knowing now what its weaknesses are?
