mallowstreet Insurance Indaba

Important

Delegates are expected to attend the full event. We do understand that this is a time commitment in diaries. Please do let us know if you need to step away for a call/meeting and we shall adjust your personal agenda.

This year, we are hosting our second mallowstreet Insurance Indaba*, bringing together some of the industry’s biggest influencers to hear a selection of interactive keynote presentations. These will be interspersed with five Investment Masterclass sessions, hosted by world-class asset managers, who will share how they manage portfolios, make decisions, view the investment landscape, and generate returns in a Solvency II regulatory environment.

This event is FREE to attend for investment decision makers and their advisers, and is accredited for CPD points by the Pensions Management Institute (PMI).

*An Indaba (pronounced in-dar-bah) is an important conference held by the izinDuna (principal people) of the Zulu or Xhosa people. The term comes from a Zulu language word meaning "business" or "matter".

  3. Ghosts of the Light Brigade: Ukraine, Russia and the West

Tennyson's poem of the suicidal charge of the Light Brigade against heavy Russian guns in Ukraine in 1854 echoes to this day. A short history of the often tense (and bloody) international clashes over Ukraine, leading to a recapitulation of today's often shallow headlines, will give way to an analysis of what an assertive President Putin feels is at stake, not only for Russia, but for the future of Europe. And it is not just Ukraine as an isolated staging post for Russian ambitions. Those ambitions are already realised in neighbouring Belarus, and firmly stated in the Transdniestrian region of neighbouring Moldova. Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland share borders with Ukraine. Lithuania, bordering Belarus, already feels the Russian chill. So the struggle, posturing and manoeuvres concern a vast swathe of Europe. NATO would not want an all-out war with Russia. Is there once again only a Light Brigade seeking to hold back a new history?

  13. Should we Trust Statistics?

The current pandemic has emphasised the key role that statistics play in understanding what is going on in the world. But how do we decide whether to trust the numbers that get put in front of us? Are they being used to inform or persuade us? Using a wide range of examples, David will look at the way that statistics can be used to try and persuade audiences to think or act in a certain way, contrast this with efforts to make communication 'trustworthy', and list the questions that you should ask whenever you are presented with claims based on numbers.

Sir David Spiegelhalter, Chair of the Winton Centre for Risk & Evidence Communication
