  17. Liability Driven Investing: The Elephant in the Room

In late September 2022, the UK pensions market was rocked to its core when the gilts market reacted strongly to the Chancellor’s uncosted mini-budget. Long term interest rates moved further in a day than they had in the entire previous decade. The impact was instantaneous as defined benefit pension funds faced huge collateral calls against their obligations under Liability Driven Investment (LDI) contracts and, briefly, the entire financial system seemed to be destabilized. The dust has settled somewhat but questions remain. What exactly happened and what is LDI? Is it an unexploded time bomb? This session looks at the early days of liability hedging, the principles underlying it and explains what could have happened if LDI had not been adopted across the pensions industry.

What happens when you get lucky and merge your two passions - music and economics - to become the first ever rockonomist. Fifteen years of frontline experience in the face of unprecedented digital disruption, that's what!

In this engaging talk, Will draws on his experience, then hop skips and jumps through the two decades of 'first to suffer, first to recover' experience in music, helps you identify your friends and foes in the battle for attention and flags where we risk making big mistakes with big data.

  31. Case Study Session I

For the Case Study sessions, delegates will assume the role of the Trustees of our fictional pension fund. Placed into pre-assigned groups, delegates (the ‘Trustees’) will work collaboratively, with discussions based on what we have learned so far in the Investment Masterclasses and Keynote Presentations.

The first session will focus on a) the risks facing the corporate sponsor and their potential impact to the pension fund b) the actions the trustees need to take today to help the Pension Fund achieve its net zero pledge and c) what questions should the Trustees be asking of, and what information should they be requesting from, their asset managers.

  45. Finding Your Edge - Talent and Leadership in Football, De la Bere Court

Ben has spent time behind the scenes with some of football’s best coaches. He shares leadership lessons from the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Sarina Wiegman to help retain talent and improve performance in business. Ben has written 14 books, all of which use football as a tool for education. He has also worked with Premier League teams as a penalty consultant to improve their strategy for penalties. He has worked closely with top-level coaches and executives at clubs across Europe to help them improve their performance and find their edge.

Ben focuses on three aspects of talent development and performance optimisation that ultimately improve performance, each time using Case Studies:

Cohesion – From his time at Athletic Bilbao in Spain, Ben learned how they became Spain’s third-most successful club despite shopping in a tiny talent pool.

Adaptability – After spending time with Thomas Tuchel, we discussed what success looks like. It constantly varies but is important to have benchmarks and be aware of the variance – otherwise it will affect performance.

Resilience – Back to Chelsea and this time with the Head Psychologist, who explained what resilience actually is and how we can identify, manage, and improve our own.
