Sanlam FOUR is majority owned by Sanlam Limited, a leading international diversified financial services group with a market capitalisation of over US$14 billion and a credit rating of AA- (Fitch). The Sanlam Group acquired a 29.9% stake in what was FOUR Capital Partners Limited (FOUR) back in 2009 which has increased over time to 89.7%. Sanlam FOUR Investments UK Limited was created through the merger of FOUR and Sanlam International Investments Limited in December 2014. Sanlam FOUR Investments UK Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sanlam FOUR Investment Holdings Limited. FOUR was set up in 2006 as a UK equity specialist boutique by its founding partners; Tom Carroll, Derrick Dunne, Chris Rodgers and Ted Williams. In 2009, we took on a European equity team and in 2010 the Global equity team was set up under the leadership of Colin McQueen. In January 2013, we launched our first Multi-Strategy capability and more recently have hired a US equity team under the leadership of Adour Sarkisian. When the company was originally set up one of the founding principles was that fund managers should own a significant stake in the business and that a large part of their remuneration would be directly linked to that ownership. We believe that this is the best way to align the interests of our funds managers with those of our clients. At the outset this was straightforward, with only one strategy, namely the UK equity product, managed by the founders. However, as we added new strategies over time we have created a more focussed form of equity by introducing a Focus Share structure that gives fund managers significant ownership of the economic value created in their specific teams. Today each team owns Focus Shares that gives them up to 30% of the economic value of their business and provides the fund managers with a true ownership structure, rather than just simply an ongoing profit share. It also means that the interests of all our investment teams continue to be closely aligned with those of our clients, while at the same time having the support of a strong parent. Sanlam was originally established as a life insurance company in 1918. It is headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa, and has offices throughout South Africa and business interests elsewhere in Africa, Australia, Europe, India and the USA. The combination of FOUR and Sanlam provides critical mass, not only in terms of the development and growth of funds under management, but also in serving to attract and retain the best talent the marketplace has on offer. Both of these are essential to achieving future performance and business objectives. The transaction has no impact on the existing investment teams or investment processes. We now have 37 employees comprising 22 investment professionals and 15 in investment operations, client service and sales & marketing support. Colin McQueen - Sanlam FOUR Investments
Colin McQueen joined Sanlam FOUR in October 2010 as a Senior Global Equity Fund Manager. Prior to joining FOUR, he was Managing Director and Head of Global Value Equities at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. In this role, Colin was responsible for the management of $2.0bn of Global Equities. Prior to this position, Colin had been Managing Director and Portfolio Manager at UBS, where his team managed $36bn of global equities. Colin was the lead manager on $10bn. During his 16 years’ experience at UBS, he was also Portfolio Manager for US equities and Fund Manager for UK Equity and Balanced Funds where he assisted with the management of £1.1bn of assets. Colin holds an MPhil in Economics from the University of Cambridge and is an Associate of the Institute of Investment Management and Research.
Alistair Wilson - TwentyFour Asset Management
Alistair joined TwentyFour in 2011 as Partner and Head of Institutional Business, with responsibility for building on the foundations already laid in this part of the business with responsibility for relationships with Global and European consultants and pension funds. TwentyFour runs over £3 billion of assets in a range of bonds funds and mandates concentrating on absolute and total return approaches to management. Alistair is a regular commentator on investment matters affecting the pension industry and sits on a number of judging panels.
Madeline Forrester - MFS
Madeline joined MFS in 2014 as Head of Institutional Business in the UK. Prior to joining MFS, she was Head of UK Institutional Sales at AXA Investment Managers. Madeline spent 14 years at Threadneedle Asset Management where she most recently held the position of Head of Global Institutional Business. Initially joining as a Fixed Income Portfolio Manager before heading up insurance asset management. Madeline is a Council Member of the Pensions Policy Institute and Chairperson of the DC Investment Forum, she has a BA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University.
