It was great to see so many mallowstreet community members at the Defined Contribution (DC) Indaba yesterday. Dawid Konotey-Ahulu kicked off the day with a brief discussion on the potential for Artificial Intelligence (AI) to radically disrupt and transform business interactions in DC and further afield.

Next, Jason Becker took us on a whistlestop tour around the world, exploring the dynamics of global pension systems with a focus on the shift from Defined Benefit (DB) to Defined Contribution (DC) schemes, asset allocation trends, and the role of alternative investments.

Reena Tanna then shared case studies of her clients who are using their DB surplus to fund DC contributions. She provided some fascinating insights into the process and challenges faced, as well as discussed how these DC Schemes operate in order to provide a seamless journey to and through retirement.

Samantha Pitt built on this discussion and turned her attention to consolidation in the Master Trust market by exploring the key drivers behind this shift.  She also delved into the implications of increased regulation and governance for DC plans – including the new Value for Money (VFM) framework – and provided actionable insights to help companies navigate the complexities of consolidation to ensure the long-term success of their DC plans.

The day finished with Sandra Wolf chairing a panel discussion with Colin Richardson, Steve Charlton and Jas Purewal, who answered a range of questions from the audience about innovation in DC.

Interspersed with these keynote sessions we had five world class asset managers presenting the following masterclasses:

·        Better Outcomes Through Innovation: Private Markets to Retirement and Beyond (AllianceBernstein)
·        Redesigning DC Portfolios to Improve Member Outcomes (Bernberg)
·        Accessing Private Credit in DC (Franklin Templeton)
·        Unlocking Value: the Real Estate Revolution in DC (Invesco)
·        Going Beyond Climate in Equities for Members of DC Schemes (Lombard Odier Investment Managers)

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and for all of your questions and insights throughout the day. What were your main takeaways from the mallowstreet DC Indaba?
