Great to see so many mallowstreet members at the Insurance Indaba yesterday. It was a fantastic day and we covered a lot of ground. My key takeaways from the day:
- David Thompson, CIO at Zurich, discussed the market conditions for insurance investors in 2025 and the potential macro impacts of the US elections. He also shared his insights on sustainable and renewable investing with a key look at how the industry can strive to achieve better returns for stakeholders and the planet.
- Chris Palmer picked up a number of David’s points, specifically the view that the insurance investment market is becoming increasingly uncertain. Chris gave his analysis of how the markets have performed and provided valuable insights into the factors shaping investment performance in 2025. Thank you to everyone who participated in the pop quiz – results to be revealed early March 2025!
- Our three distinguished panelists, Nenna Gilmour-Platt, Head of Investment Strategy at Just Group, Hayley Rees, Managing Director at PIC Capital, and Hilkka Komulainen, Head of Responsible Investment at Aegon UK, made it through the first question: where are the best investment opportunities you are seeing from an E, S or G perspective? It was a fantastic discussion and it was great to learn directly from three expert market practitioners about the best opportunities they are seeing right now.
- Angel Kansagra, Head of ALM and Investment Solutions at Lloyd’s of London closed the day with a great talk about the Lloyd’s initiatives aiming to generate top quartile investment performance and enhance efficiency of investment operations over the next decade.
Interspersed between these sessions we had five world class managers presenting in the investment workshops:
- Corporate Direct Lending – Right Diversification in an Established Market (Berenberg)
- The Continued Growth of Direct Lending and Key Considerations for Institutional Investors (Blue Owl)
- A New Cycle in Commodities Credit? Generating Diversified and Differentiated Returns and Income from Commodities Credit and Trade Finance (Gemcorp)
- Structural Trends Supporting the Long-term Japan Investment Case (Tokio Marine Asset Management)
- Investment Opportunities in Distributed Solar Power Generation in the U.S. and Europe (True Green Capital)
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and for all of your questions and contributions throughout the day. It would be great to hear your main takeaways in the comments below!
