  17. Navigating Uncharted Waters: P&C Challenges for the Decades to Come

With a wealth of experience in the US insurance industry, from his days as Chief Investment Officer - General Insurance at American International Group (AIG), Guillermo will illustrate that high nominal interest rates do not necessarily ensure industry profitability.

In the coming decades, we may encounter an economic environment characterised by very low, or even negative, real interest rates. To navigate this scenario effectively, companies should focus on developing a strategic asset allocation that enhances the real rate buffer by adding risk premia.

Although this analysis focuses on the U.S. property and casualty insurance industry, the metrics and conclusions presented are applicable to other developed insurance markets as well.

  26. Very Bad People & The Pinstripe Army

Long-established democracies are at risk, the Amazon rainforest could cease to exist; emblematic species like the rhino, tiger and sharks could disappear - heralds of mass extinction - and we are in the midst of a new Cold War: in our lifetimes rarely has reading the news been so overwhelming. Moreover, all of these things - and more have been long predicted and could have been prevented, but were not. Why?

In his talk Patrick, Co-founder of Global Witness and author of Very Bad People and Terrible Humans, will take you inside the Shadow Network and into the heart of the matter: corruption. His talk will take you with him on a journey to meet heads of state & corrupt politicians, the CEOs of the world’s biggest companies, kingpins of organised crime, corporate lobbyists and armed militias, and you’ll meet their enablers: operating in a seemingly parallel universe, hidden in plain sight, you’ll meet the lawyers, bankers, accountants and others, who together facilitate some of the world’s most egregious, biggest and yet most secret crimes.

It has been noted that many technical industries suffer from poor management. In this session, Jenny discusses the qualities of great managers and the need for businesses to ensure they are getting it right when it comes to promotions. Promoting the right people for the right reasons, and providing them with the necessary support once they reach these leadership positions is imperative to creating a culture where employees feel valued.

  39. Management 2.0 (Post-COVID)

In this session, Jenny touches on the management challenges and opportunities presented by hybrid working. Whilst employers often want employees to return to the office for reasons such as culture, innovation, and collaboration, this desire is sometimes driven by a lack of trust or a desire for control. On the other hand, employees often prefer to work from home because they feel more efficient, forgetting they are part of a team. Jenny discusses how businesses can find a balance that allows for both efficiency and collaboration and how we can achieve a healthier meeting culture.

  45. How the Earth Shaped Human History

When we talk about human history, we focus on great leaders, revolutions, and technological advances. But how has the Earth itself determined our destiny? How has our planet made us?

As a species we are shaped by our environment. Geological forces drove our evolution in East Africa; mountainous terrain led to the development of democracy in Greece; and today voting behaviour in the United States follows the bed of an ancient sea. The human story is the story of these forces, from plate tectonics and climate change, to atmospheric circulation and ocean currents.

By taking us through millennia of human history, and billions of years into our planet’s past, Professor Lewis Dartnell tells us the ultimate origin story. When we reach the point where history becomes science we see a vast web of connections that underwrites our modern world and helps us face the challenges of the future. From the cultivation of the first crops to the founding of modern states, origins reveals the Earth’s awesome impact on the shape of human civilizations.
